Alex is an international human rights lawyer. He has over twenty years’ experience in national and international criminal law, transitional justice and human rights. His experience has been gained as a practitioner, academic and professional consultant.
Originally in practice at the English criminal Bar for ten years, Alex spent the next five years as a United Nations war crimes prosecutor in Kosovo and Cambodia. He has operated as an independent consultant in human rights, transitional justice and international criminal law since 2009. Alex works within a global network of fellow international legal professionals and on larger projects can assemble a team of trusted associates.
Alex advises public, private and non-governmental organisations, governments, international and domestic criminal tribunals and trans-national organisations in all areas of his expertise. He produces high-quality analysis of current issues in international criminal law, human rights and transitional justice, and has trained legal professionals across all three fields. He is an associate at the international legal partnership Global Rights Compliance LLP and was a founding partner of the Anglo-French human rights legal advisory firm Global Diligence LLP, for whom he continues to consult.
In August 2015 he joined Liverpool University Law School, lecturing on human rights, transitional justice and criminal evidence. He is also a Visiting Fellow of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London, with whom he has collaborated on a number of recent projects including 'Protecting Education in Armed Conflict and Insecurity' and 'Transitional Justice in Cambodia and Sierra Leone' - see the tab 'Resources' above for more details. He is a member of the International Network to Promote the Rule of Law (INPROL) and a member of the Human Rights Lawyers' Association.
He has worked in Asia, Africa, the Americas and across Europe, and is regularly invited to speak on the subject of international criminal law, transitional justice and human rights at seminars and universities.
Alex lectures, teaches and publishes in the fields of human rights, international criminal law, transitional justice, rule of law and business and human rights.
He holds a BA/MA in law from Cambridge University and an LLM in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law from Lancaster University, as well as a United Nations certificate in Cross-Cultural Negotiation. He is also a qualified civil and commercial mediator, and runs Mediation Manchester, a mediation practice based in the north west of England. He speaks, reads and writes fluent French (B2-C1 level).
